Goings on about town….

Whew! This place (aka my life) has been transition central lately. New house. New job. New state. And a new quilt! We got a lovely quilt from Kate as a housewarming, which has been keeping us toasty warm during our new chilly nights. I thought I would try my hand at making a quilt. It was my first, so much was learned as I went….

Phase 1

Phase 1

Here I learned that my life was made so much easier with a rotary cutter, self-healing mat, and big ass clear ruler.  And that despite all those tools cutting a perfect square is damn near impossible!!  So these are 7″ squares to be hitched together with 1/2″ seams……

Phase 2

Phase 2

Here I learned just how improper my cutting was as I sewed a few rows and then went about trying to make the corners line up.  Meaning they did not always do so..some would, others wouldn’t, out came seam ripper or choice was made about livable mistakes??  From here finishing it was easy peasey! Pieced together yellow fabric to make a 1/2″ border all the way around and then quilted it the way Kate told me about.  Cut a piece of fleece same size as quilt top, sew most of it together, and then flip it right side out and sew the opening shut!  So simple.

Ta-Da!

Ta-Da!

So then I top stitched all the seams, learned I cannot sew a straight line when my eyes have been staring at a sewing machine all day and that next time, yes I would totally do this again, I need to pace myself…..
